Main tweet:
We are creating new Igbo words and we need your feedback!
The first word that we created is IGBO WORD
which means ENGLISH WORD
. We wanted to get Igbo speakers' thoughts on whether it means ENGLISH WORD
to you, as in ENGLISH DEFINITION
For example, IGBO EXAMPLE
would mean ENGLISH_EXAMPLE
Some FAQs in 🧵
First thread
Why do we care to create new Igbo words?
Igbo is officially a threatened language and is on track to becoming extinct. One of our goals at @nkowaokwu is not only to preserve the Igbo language but also to expand it, which includes creating new words.
Second thread
How did we come up with this word?
We have a publicly available Nkọwa okwu Newly Constructed Words Review Process doc that walks through our method of creating this word
https://www.notion.so/Nk-wa-okwu-Constructed-Words-Review-Process-cccc6e79e0ee4bdab8d3a538f0cd559c
Third thread
How can you give feedback?
If you disagree or agree with this word, we truly want to know why! Is it easy to pronounce? Do you see yourself using this word while speaking Igbo? etc.
Leave a comment in this thread. Our community will be stalking this thread 👀
If a word gets a ‘yes’ on Twitter poll, the word gets edited in the Word Suggestions section and merged into the Words section.
If a single word poll gets a ‘No’ on Twitter poll, it will be recorded in a ‘review later’ list while other words, yet to be created or polled, get processed by the translators. The word that got a ‘No’ will be reviewed some other time.
This is a special case that would require the community suggesting this new variation of the word to be more than the votes for the most popular option available in the poll. If this happens, the community’s suggestion will be recorded in the ‘review later’ list to be reviewed later while other words, yet to be created or polled, get processed by the translators. The community’s new suggestion will be added into the dictionary if Translators agree with it. But if translators do not, the suggestion will be polled with a new word offered by Translators for the same Word Suggestion.
