Motivation

We need to ensure our budget lasts until June while simultaneously working towards achieving our target goal of 25,000. If we continue to pay out while underperforming, there is a risk of depleting our funds without achieving our target.

In order to avoid this scenario, we are implementing a pay-as-you-work system that allows us to allocate our budget based on completed work.

Pay-as-you-work

How performance is measured and used for payment

Starting from the month of March 2023, each lexicographer will be paid according to the work that individual has completed for the month. The “pay-as-you-work” type of payment ensures that we meet our target and that each team member gets paid accordingly.

Example: Paying a lexicographer for their completed work

Let’s take the following image as an example of work to be completed for the month.

This is an example image of the number of expected dialectal variations and example sentences to be completed with a month. THESE NUMBERS ARE NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE CURRENT AMOUNT OF WORK NEEDED TO BE COMPLETED.

This is an example image of the number of expected dialectal variations and example sentences to be completed with a month. THESE NUMBERS ARE NOT REPRESENTATIVE OF THE CURRENT AMOUNT OF WORK NEEDED TO BE COMPLETED.

For this current month, the lexicographer is tasked to complete 457 dialectal variations and 550 example sentences.

What is a “price per unit”?

There is a “price per unit” associated with completing a dialectal variation, and another separate “price per unit” associated with completing an example sentence. These “price per unit” values are used to calculate the total amount of money to pay lexicographers. Unlike the monthly targets that are not fixed (meaning they can slightly change from month to month), the “price per unit” values are fixed and they will stay consistent despite how much work is needed to be completed each month to stay on track

Situation 1: Completing 100% of work

100% of work” is whatever sums up to $750 USD.

If the lexicographer completes all 457 dialectal variations and 546 example sentences, then they will be paid for the full amount of work of the month which is $750 USD.

Situation 2: Completing less than 100% of work

Let’s say the lexicographer only completes half of their work. Specifically, 228 dialectal variations and 273 example sentences. In this case, they will be paid half of the full month amount which will be $375 USD.

Situation 3: Completing more than 100% of work

Let’s say the lexicographer is an overachiever and was able to complete more of their work for the given month. For example, if the lexicographer completes 125% of their work. Specifically, 571 dialectal variations and 683 example sentences, then they will be paid 125% of their $750 USD, which will be $937.5 USD.

How does this model ensure that we don’t run out of money?
